The U2 Graffiti Wall at Windmill Lane Studios is where U2's music began. They recorded their first three albums there. They continued to use Windmill Lane throughout the 1980's. The wall outside the studio has been marked with chalk, pens and paint over the years by U2 fans from all around the world. Although the studio is no longer located there, the wall still stands as an amazing tribute to the "greatest band on the planet".

Artists such as U2, Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor, and Elvis Costello have recorded there. U2 recorded their first three albums at Windmill.

The site of the old studios is covered in graffiti from fans who have paid pilgrimage from all over the world. For U2 fans wishing to visit the site please note it is not sign posted at all and continuously tourists get lost looking for it..

Windmill Lane Studios have been recommended as a tourist attraction by publications such as The New York Times. Many people are attracted by the significant amounts of graffiti left as a tribute to acts such as U2 and some even add to it themselves when they visit the site.

Dublin Docklands is the area of the city of Dublin, Ireland, on both sides of the River Liffey, roughly from Talbot Memorial Bridge eastwards to the Point Depot. It was until recently undergoing a large amount of development but it now appears to be entering into a period of decline and urban decay due to the current economic crisis.

The Dublin Docklands are rich in maritime history, engineering triumphs and landmark architecture so the area is well worth a visit.

The first major international exhibition of contemporary art in Dublin since 1988.
The title and theme of Dublin Contemporary 2011 is Terrible Beauty—Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance. Taken from William Butler Yeats’ famous poem “Easter, 1916”, the exhibition’s title borrows from the Irish writer’s seminal response to turn-of-the-century political events to site art’s underused potential for commenting symbolically on the world’s societal, cultural and economic triumphs and ills. The second part of the exhibition’s title underscores Dublin Contemporary 2011’s emphasis on art that captures the spirit of the present time, while introducing the exhibition’s chief organizational engine: The Office of Non-Compliance.

I had the opportunity to visit the Exhibition at Earlsfort Terrace and I should mention that the organizers kindly provided a press pass.

As you can see from my photographs I found some aspects of the building to be as interesting as the artwork on display. I have come across some negative comments on the web but everyone that I spoke to while I was there really liked it and it certainly appealed to children. Myself, I really enjoyed my visit.

Please excuse the quality of some of the photographs but as I do not use flash the available light was an ongoing problem for me.

A NEW VISUAL arts exhibition has opened in Dublin which features over 90 artists from five continents.

A major exhibition called The Office of Non-Compliance is housed in Earlsfort Terrace and I hope to publish some photographs later this week. The Iveagh Gardens are being transformed into a sculpture garden throughout the six-week event and I took the opportunity to photograph some go them. I assume that more are to be added, I will check on a regular basis.

Theme

The title and theme of Dublin Contemporary 2011 is Terrible Beauty—Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance. Headed up by Dublin Contemporary 2011 lead curators Jota Castro (artist/curator) and Christian Viveros-Fauné (critic/curator), The Office of Non-Compliance will function as a collaborative agency within Dublin Contemporary 2011, establishing creative solutions for real or symbolic problems that stretch the bounds of conventional art experience.

Venues and Programme

The main exhibition hub at Earlsfort Terrace, former home of University College Dublin, will provide a range of unusual spaces for mini solo exhibitions that range from large-scale installations to smaller intimate hangings. The Office of Non-Compliance, located within the Earlsfort Terrace exhibition site, will function as a promoter of ideas around a laundry list of non-conformist art proposals. This element of the exhibition will include ad-hoc, accessible structures for discourse around art and its place in society.

Extending its reach across the city, Dublin Contemporary 2011 will partner with four important Dublin galleries: The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, The National Gallery of Ireland and The Royal Hibernian Academy.

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane will present a retrospective of the work of renowned Irish artist Willie Doherty. An exhibition of American painter Alice Neel’s striking, psychologically penetrating portraits will take place at The Douglas Hyde Gallery.

The National Gallery of Ireland will host works by a number of international artists as well as a new commission by the distinguished Irish artist Brian O’Doherty. The Royal Hibernian Academy will host an exhibition of works by American painter Lisa Yuskavage and a new commission by Irish artist James Coleman.

Since 2002 Duthain Dealbh have created theamed sand sculptors in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle. The theme for the 2011 instillation is 'Compass'. Work began on the sculptors in late July and they will be on display, free of charge, for the month of August.

Duthain Dealbh (Fleeting Sculpture in Irish), is a group of the three Irish sculptors Daniel Doyle, Niall Magee and Alan Magee, all graduates of Fine Art Sculpture from the Dublin Institute of Technology. Duthain Dealbh was formed officially in 2001 to facilitate the production of large scale sculpture projects and Documentary & film making. They specialise in the ephemeral sculpture materials of Sand, Snow, Ice & Fire, attending sculpture festivals and symposia all over the world and also the production of art based documentaries and films.
The origins of their involvement in this area stemmed from in an invitation to participate in an international Sand Sculpture event which arrived at the university for Fergus Mulvaney, back in 1993. After this introduction more invitations came which allowed the three members of Duthain Dealbh, Magee, Doyle and Magee to be introduced to the various ephemeral media.

Over the last number of years Duthain Dealbh has also branched into Ice sculpting, participating successfully in many competitions and festivals around the world. Their first Film/Documentary Production, "Cool Carvings" was extremely well received and had its first airing on TG4 in 2003, and also received great praise when it was screened at the İzmir International Film Festival in Turkey in 2004.

Two members, Alan Magee and Daniel Doyle, have returned form an international Ice sculpture competition in Jelgava, Latvia where for the second year running they have been awarded First prize. In 2007 their sculpture entitled 'Why are we here?' was a poignant depiction of the humanity between two apposing soldiers in the midst of war.

Windmill Lane in Dublin has often been recommended as a "must see" tourist attraction by publications such as The New York Times. Many people, local and foreign, are attracted by the significant amounts of graffiti left as a tribute to acts such as U2 and some even add to it themselves when they visit the site.

It should be noted that there is very little U2 specific graffiti remaining at this location. Until a few weeks ago there was another "U2 Graffiti Wall" nearby at Hanover Quay but when I last visited the U2 specific graffiti had been painted over.

Windmill Lane Studios, also known as the "U2 studio", was a three-storey music recording studio located in Windmill Lane. It was opened in 1978 by Brian Masterson who is a company director and head engineer. It was originally used to record traditional Irish music until U2 came along and began to record there.

The actual studios having moved elsewhere. Nevertheless, the building is still a popular tourist attraction.

Hanover Quay Studios became a focal point for U2 fans from across the world and the wall across the street became the new ‘U2 Wall’, featuring lots of graffiti. In general the graffiti was not very artistic but I considered it to be interesting.

I visit the area every few weeks and when I visited earlier this week I was more than a little bit surprised to see the most of the U2 specific graffiti had been painted over and replaced by very generic graffiti and/or street art.

Windmill Lane Studios is globally recognised for its connection to internationally recognised artists of Irish extraction such as U2, Sinéad O'Connor, Eleanor McEvoy, The Corrs, and Clannad, whilst Van Morrison acquired it for his own personal use in 2006. Juniper, the band which later became Bell X1 and Damien Rice, recorded some of their musical material on location at the studios during their brief existence in the 1990s, including the song which eventually divided them creatively. The Clannad song, "Theme from Harry's Game", which went on to chart in the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well as in the band's native Ireland, was originally recorded at Windmill Lane Studios. International artists have also made use of Windmill Lane Studios; these include the Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, Kylie Minogue, R.E.M., Elvis Costello, The Waterboys and The Spice Girls. Albums to have been fully or partially recorded at Windmill Lane Studios include Boy, War and The Joshua Tree by U2, Back on Top, Magic Time and Pay the Devil by Van Morrison, Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, Fisherman's Blues by The Waterboys, and Spike by Elvis Costello.

Renowned producers such as Steve Lillywhite, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Stephen Street, Geoff Emerick, Nellee Hooper, Trevor Horn, Flood and Don Was have made extensive use of the facilities at Windmill Lane Studios.

The Merrion Promenade Pier and Baths Co built Sandymount swimming baths in 1883. The baths measured approximately 40 by 40 metres, with a 75-metre pier added in 1884. The pier featured a bandstand half way along it and summer concerts were regularly held there for many years. By 1920, the pier had deteriorated so much that it had to be demolished. The concrete baths section, which resembles a small harbour, remains.

I think that the artist has made a mistake here. If I remember correctly the showband was named the "The Clipper Carlton" not "The Clipper Carton". Maybe the error was deliberate.

Personally, I really hated all the showbands (with the possible exception of the Freshmen).

Strabane's Clipper Carlton are credited with popularising the showband. Fronted by Fergie O'Hagan, they were originally a touring big band. They later became popular in Britain and on the U.S. and Canadian Irish club circuit.

The Icon Factory is an Artist’s Co-operative based in Temple Bar.

Artists are invited to produce art based on Irish Icons such as writers, musicians, sports figures and others of cultural importance. The art thus produced is presented to the public by the Icon factory.

Below is a quote from the organizers:

Raison d’ etre.

"The driving force behind this cooperative effort grew from the realization that the culture had changed and for many of us that meant that we were on our own. It seemed to us that a seismic systemic failure across the entire landscape had occurred and that our former leaders, those who had taken us to this place were the last ones likely to get us out of the mess. No point in waiting for things to get better, they won’t, so have some fun. Patrick Bartholomew "Bertie" Ahern (born 12 September 1951) is a former Irish politician who served as Taoiseach of Ireland from 26 June 1997 to 7 May 2008.

On 30 December 2010, in a speech to his party cumann in the Dublin Central constituency, he announced that he would not be contesting the 2011 general election.[66] Ahern said he had made it clear as far back as 2002 that it was always his plan to step down as a TD before he was 60.

Asked if he had any regrets, he said:
“If I had seen the banking crisis coming. Nobody advised me, no economist, all those people now writing books saying ‘I told you so’ – none of them.”
On Anglo Irish Bank, he said:

Referring to the “great economic storm” currently under way in Ireland, he warned against excessive pessimism:

Smithfield is an area on the northside of Dublin. Its focal point is a public square, formerly an open market, now officially called Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market.

Notable landmarks include the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery and the Observation Tower (now closed to the public).

Despite a recent extensive rejuvenated program under the HARP (Historic Area Rejuvenation Plan) the area is currently suffering unexpected decline in fortunes.

Historically, Smithfield was a suburb of Oxmantown and lay within the civil parish of St. Paul's. There is no general agreement on the extent of the area known as Smithfield, but it might be said to incorporate the area bounded by the River Liffey to the south, Bow Street to the east, Queen Street to the west, and North Brunswick street in the suburb of Grangegorman to the north.

On the first Sunday of every month there is a horse market in Smithfield and personally I would suggest that you keep well away from it. For example: around 11:30 am on the morning of the horse fair on 6 March 2011 shooting occurred as a result of a feud between two families. Three people were wounded. An explosive device was recovered and examined by Irish Army experts. Two men were arrested.

Even though the Horse Fair continues to attract serious and sustained criticism from a wide range of sources, including the police, the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) and the majority of newer residents, legal difficulties in closing down and/or moving the market, coupled with its centuries-old heritage, have left the city council and the horse fair organizers and supporters locked in an ongoing battle without any clear resolution ahead.

Many years ago I actually tried to purchase an apartment in this complex but there were all sorts of issues so I decided not to go ahead with the purchase. Despite the fact that I had view the complex I was unaware of the existence of this little raised courtyard.

The Irish Life Centre on Abbey street is a large development on the old Brooks Thomas (building supplies) site.

There are a numbers of blocks of various heights around courtyards both at streetlevel and raised.

There is living accommodation as well as an uninteresting mall, which I never liked, and there is plenty of office space.

To the best of my knowledge there are two courtyards. The larger of the two is open to Abbey Street at one end and it features a fountain and sculpture while the smaller one is a raised courtyard which could be described as "an oasis of greenery".

Moore Street is located in central Dublin, Ireland, off Henry Street, one of Ireland's main shopping streets.

The famous Moore Street open air fruit and vegetable market is Dublin's oldest food market.

Many visitors and tourist guide writers get very excited about Moore Street but I must admit that I have never really liked the place even though I live very close to the north end of the street.

Bray is a town in north County Wicklow. It is a busy urban centre and seaside town, with a population of 31,901 making it the fourth largest in Ireland (excluding the five cities) as of the 2006 census. It is situated about 20 km (12 mi) south of Dublin on the east coast. The town straddles the Dublin-Wicklow border, with a portion of the northern suburbs situated in County Dublin.

The town is the location of some industry and is home for many who commute to Dublin by car or rail but it is also a shopping town for the surrounding area.

In the 50's and 60's the town was a major destination for holiday-makers from Northern Ireland. Even though the number of visitors from NI has greatly declined Bray is still a popular holiday resort with numerous hotels and guesthouses, shops, restaurants and evening entertainment. The town also plays host to a number of high-profile festivals and events.

Bray is a popular base for walkers, ramblers and strollers. It is notable for its mile-long promenade which stretches from the harbour, with its colony of Mute Swans, to Bray Head at the southern end of the promenade - from where a well worn track leads to the summit. Also very popular with walkers is the 7 km (4 mi) Cliff Walk along Bray Head out to Greystones (as of April 2009, the Cliff Walk is officially closed, although actually passable, to walkers due to the risk of rock falls and subsidence).

The annual Bray Summerfest is an established tourist event, taking place over six weeks in July and August. The Summerfest features over 100 free entertainment events, including live music, markets, sporting entertainment, carnivals, and family fun.

Bray also hosts one of the largest carnival and festival events to celebrate the annual St Patrick's holiday. The Bray St Patrick's Carnival & Parade is presented by Bray & District Chamber and is a five-day festival of carnival fun, parades, and live entertainment.

Bray hosts an annual international jazz festival on the May bank holiday weekend each year. Described by The Irish Times as 'the connoisseur's jazz festival', Bray Jazz Festival has established itself as one of the main events taking place each year on the Irish jazz calendar. Established in 2000, the festival includes performances by leading-name jazz and world music artists from Ireland and abroad.

In 2009 the event was described by All About Jazz as "one of the very best small jazz festivals in Europe".

Bray is home to Ireland's only dedicated film studios, Ardmore Studios where films such as Excalibur, Braveheart, and Breakfast on Pluto were shot.

Many years ago I had to attend for a job interview in George's Street but I could not find the address that I had been given and as I could not find an operational public phone I failed to turn up at the specified time and the company in question were unwilling to reschedule when I finally managed to contact them. The problem was that I did not know that there are two streets in Dublin named George's Street … one on the south side and the other on the north side.

Great George’s Street North has survived much as it was when first built in the 18th century. The pavements are composed of the original granite paving slabs, even though some were damaged by workmen a number of years ago. Many of the houses are still lived in as private residences but unfortunately some have gone the usual way for Georgian houses in Dublin and are currently occupied by offices and institutions. For years the residents have fought an ongoing battle to preserve the street and prevent commercial exploitation. In this they have had some success.

Banksy is the pseudonym of a English graffiti artist, political activist and painter, whose identity is unconfirmed. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent black humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such creative works involving political and social commentary have been displayed on streets, walls, and bridges of urban centers throughout the world.

Banksy's work was initially born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved partnerships between designers and musicians. According to author and graphic designer Tristan Manco, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England".

The son of a photocopier specialist, he qualified as a butcher yet became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s. Experts have observed that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 around Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Underground System in the late nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties.

Known for his contempt for the authorities in labelling graffiti as criminal damage, Banksy exhibits his art on public surfaces such as walls and even going as far as to build physical prop pieces. Banksy doesn't market photographs associated with street graffiti directly himself; nonetheless, art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the successful bidder. Banksy's first movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as "the world's very first street art disaster movie", made its first appearance at the 2010 Sundance Movie Festival.

The motion picture was released in the UK on 5 March 2010 and in January 2011 he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.

Kilroy was here is an American popular culture expression, often seen in graffiti. Its origins are debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle—a bald-headed man (possibly with a few hairs) with a prominent nose peeking over a wall with the fingers of each hand clutching the wall—is widely known among U.S. residents who lived during World War II.

In Britain, the graffiti is known as "Mr. Chad" or just "Chad", and the Australian equivalent to the phrase is "Foo was here". "Foo was here" might date from World War I, and the character of Chad may have derived from a British cartoonist in 1938, possibly pre-dating "Kilroy was here".

A Quincy, Massachusetts shipyard inspector named J.J. Kilroy may have been the origin of the phrase "Kilroy was here" in WWII. Etymologist Dave Wilton wrote that "Some time during the war, Chad and Kilroy met, and in the spirit of Allied unity merged, with the British drawing appearing over the American phrase." "Foo was here" became popular amongst Australian schoolchildren of post-war generations. Other names for the character include Smoe, Clem, Flywheel, Private Snoops, Overby, The Jeep, and Sapo.

Author Charles Panati says that in the US "the mischievous face and the phrase became a national joke... The outrageousness of the graffiti was not so much what it said, but where it turned up."

The major Kilroy graffiti fad ended in the 1950s, but today people all over the world still scribble the character and "Kilroy was here" in schools, trains, and other similar public areas.

Where's my NAMA? You know what I mean? I worked on the sites round here and when I got laid off I still had to pay me mortgage every month. But we're bailing these boys out. I don't get it.

The middle to the end of the sixties saw the dyin' end of the docks it just slowly went down. If any of the old dockers came back today and looked down from Butt bridge they'd call you a liar. They'd go that's not where I worked.
